FUJI SAFARI PARK IN SUSONO CITY

Fuji safari Park in Susono City at the foot of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefectures is one of only six full-scale zoological parks you can enjoy visiting all year round.
Open in 1980, it includes a vast Safari Zone where many animals live in controlled freedom. They can be observed from your own car or from the car bus inside seven different zones for bears, lions, tigers, cheetahs, elephants, and many other animals from rhinos to flamingoes.

The “Jungle Bus” with wire netting over windows is popular because visitors can feed fierce animals at close quarters.
The “Animal Village” or “Fureai” in Japanese, allow visitors to come into direct contact with more than 22 kinds of small animals.
Depending upon the season, a “Night Safari” allows visitors to observe animals at night.

SUMPU-PARK

The remains of Sumpu Castle built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1585 are surrounded by an outer moat, inner moat and beautiful stone walls. The south east tower in one corner of the park, and the east gate were restored, and the scenery makes it easy for you to imagine what it was like in the Edo Period.

FRUIT PARK IN HAMAMATSU CITY

The main entrance
The park is truly enormous and the car park is even bigger.
We realised that we had to limit this visit to the main attraction, the Tropical Fruit Dome!

The hall leading to the dome was full of information but the air-conditioning did not prepare us to the heat inside the dome!
By the way if you can read japanese check their HOMEPAGE as it will help you recognize some very strange fruit!

Cocoa!

Red bananas!

Insects and pests had better beware!

Outside the dome a cafe/restaurant will welcome you inside a beautiful park.
But actually the Tropical Fruit Park and the big park with ponds outside represent only one fourth of the whole complex!
You will have to plan half a day for a complete visit even with the help of a mini train!

Among others, you will discover fields of plum trees, orange trees, apple trees, strawberries, grapes, blueberries, kiwi fruit, almond trees, figs, peach trees, pomegranate trees, a field of nut trees including chestnuts and a lot more inside greenhouses and experiment fields!

This park will warrant a least a couple more visits to describe it all!

Koike Village Chief House in Yui!

SN3O5090

Because Shizuoka City and Prefecture were more an area of intense travelling than Kyoto or Tokyo where people gathered and built according to the size of their population (and money), it seems that our region lacks in historical and cultural assets.
Actually, until Tokugawa Ieyasu made his retreat at the beginning of the 17th Century in Sumpu (Shizuoka City) travelers had still to stay there overnight and eat and drink. Accordingly, many old houses and lodgings can still be discovered along the Old Tokaido Route.
Tourists should not overlook them as their smaller size, easier access and cheap/free entrances provide them with a rare glimpse of life of past times. Sometimes such sightseeing off the beaten tracks is more rewarding than grandiose but crowded monuments!
One house worthy of a visit lies along the Old Tokaido Route in Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, only a few minutes away on foot from Yui JR Station: Koike Village House which was incidentally registered as a National Important Cultural Asset in October 1998.

SN3O5091

The entrance!

SN3O5092

Note the “namako/seaslug wall”!

SN3O5093

Time to study Japanese! Don’t worry most of what is written on the board is mentioned in this article! LOL

SN3O5097

The entrance and the noren/暖簾/entrance curtain!
Such a village house would also serve as a registar house in Edo Times hence another historical source of importance!

SN3O5098

A small room has been refurbished into a small museum you will get into through another noren!

SN3O5099

Take time to look at old pictures of Yui Village!

SN3O5100

Through the bay window of the small museum you will discover a tiny but adorable Japanese garden!

SN3O5101

Important documents are still preserved there!

SN3O5102y

Life articles of a time past!

SN3O5103

The modest size of the very well preserved living quarters will give you a chance for great photogtraphy of a true Japanese abode of yore.

SN3O5104

You actually may walk inside if you take your shoes off! That will permit you to not only take great photographs but experience a real feel under the soles of your feet!

SN3O5105

Contrary to the interminable lodgings of ancient nobles, it has the merit to introduce you to a real size living house!

SN3O5106

If you are am antique buff you will be surprised to find this very heavy antique shave ice machine worth a fortune at auctions!

SN3O5107

Take all your time to admire the small exquisite garden full of surprises!

SN3O5108

I have never seen that lantern-supporting sumo wrestler anywhere before!

SN3O5109

Every season will offer you a different glimpse!

SN3O5110

Very unusual moss!

SN3O5111

SN3O5112

Having a second look before departing…

SN3O5113

I would advise you to take a good camera along as the place is dark inside, but you must have also a look at the raftings, the ceiling and theattic!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Seikenji Temple in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5150

I’m an agnostic and cares little for religion but it would be a grave oversight to ignore some of the grand Buddhist temples or Shinto Shrines in Japan and Shizuoka Prefecture as they are a great source of history, architecture, art and culture.
I can always leave the obvious religious connotations to the care of friend bloggers with different priorities!
There is a major Buddhist Temple in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, which definitely deserves a lot of attention, namely Seikenji Temple/清見寺 along the Tokaido Road.
Just follow me and I’ll explain along the way!

SN3O5045

First take a train on JR Tokaido Line and get off at Okitsu Station.

SN3O5046

Get out of the station and walk till the main road and turn right.
At the station you will see this sign clearly indicating you are about to discover Seikenji Temple!
Bear in mind this is a good 15~20 minute walk, so choose a bright shiny (no hot) day!

SN3O5047

While you are at it take the time to read the other signs describing the Tokai Nature Trail Bypass Course!

SN3O5048

Definitely worth reading it!

SN3O5053

Halfway find this sign along the right hand side signboard for a little history of the Tokaido Road!

SN3O5055

You cannot miss it and take the time to read the board there, too!

SN3O5056

Walk up the stairs and through the first portal before you cross over the Tokaido Railway Line!

SN3O5057

Take your time for plenty of pictures!

SN3O5059

From the railway line overhead bridge!

SN3O5060

Trains run along every 5~10 minutes!

SN3O5061

Past the bridge proceed to your right.

SN3O5062

The main entrance Gate!

SN3O5063

Temples are always well protected!

SN3O5064

Buddhist temples as a general look after a big cemetery.

SN3O5066

Being religious or not there are always plenty of quaint sights!

SN3O5067

One of the main buildings!

SN3O5068

Walking across the outside plum tree garden!
In the right season the place is exploding into superb colors!

SN3O5069

But before proceeding any further turn left and penetrate a strange place with even stranger figures!

SN3O5070

All the faces and in some many cases most of the postures of these “deities” are different!

SN3O5071

In daytime they look quite benign!

SN3O5072

This is one of these oldest parts of Seikenji Temple built during the Nara Era!

SN3O5073

Great contrast between old wood and tiles and the bright sky!

SN3O5074

The entrance portal overlooking Okitsu Harbor!

SN3O5075

The “bonsho” bell tower!

SN3O5076

The “garyubai/臥龍唄” plum tree variety was developed there by the Overlord Tokugawa Ieyasu in the beginning of the 17th Century.
It is also the name of a famous Japanese sake brand brewed by Sanwa Brewery in Shimizu Ku!

SN3O5077

Over the entrance you will find the Hollyhock/Aoi/葵 represented on Tokugawa Ieyasu Mon/Japanese Arms/文!

SN3O5078

Past the entrance, ring the (real bronze) bell and a monk will collect a 300 yen visiting fee (very small considering the importance of the place!)!

SN3O5079

Don’t forget to take off your shoes and put on slippers before climbing the small stairs to the main room!

Note: There are plenty of “washrooms” there so take your time!

SN3O5080

There is an advised route to follow but you are free to wander, so I went to have a look at the inner garden!

SN3O5081

But I couldn’t walk back to take a picture of this magnificent phoenix!

SN3O5082

The space dedicated to Buddhist services.

SN3O5083

Plenty to read overhead!

SN3O5084

back to the garden, which is small but is still nationally designated as a place of scenic beauty!

SN3O5085

Wave-patterned gravel bed!

SN3O5086

There are plenty of cultural assets including this coffer with the hollyhock crest!

SN3O5087

Sorry for the disorder but this the real order I took pictures! Professional are going to kick me! LOL

SN3O5088

The temple not being too big you can get a good impression of the architecture!

SN3O5089

Guest/meeting room and sliding doors.

SN3O5090

Another picture of the garden taken through an opening!

SN3O5091

The main room with a “tokonoma”!

SN3O5092

Yet another view into the garden!

SN3O5093

A verdant island!

SN3O5094

The famous monk, Hakuin!

SN3O5095

An antique “shamisen”!

SN3O5096

A colorfully decorated “tansu”!

SN3O5097

A view of the front plum tree garden!

SN3O5098

The real pictures of the whole crew of 104 sailors aboard the Tsukijima Maru Ship which got marooned in the Suruga Bay just in front of Okitsu.
The ship was subsequently attacked by rebel samurais who had not surrendered in spite of their defeat in Hakodate and roamed the country for many years after.
The whole crew was killed and thrown overboard.
Jirochoo, a notable of Shimizu City became a local hero when he personally collected all their bodies to give them a decent funeral.
But that is the official story… A volunteer guide confided me that the so-called hero actually was in a hurry to clean the sea and shore to allow fishing again as soon as possible…

SN3O5099

The place does contain many precious drawings!

SN3O5100

One can walk up to a smaller meeting room on the next floor.

SN3O5101

For another grand view of Okitsu Harbor!

SN3O5102

An overhead view of the entrance lobby!

SN3O5103

Hakuin again!
His face can be seen on the labels of Hakuin Masamune Japanese Sake bottles produce by Takashima Brewery in Numazu City!

SN3O5104

Back through the outside garden!

SN3O5105

When you leave take the side exit down the stairs and across the railway line!

SN3O5106

See you there again next February when the plum trees will be in full bloom!

Fruit Park in Hamamatsu City!

Half way along our trip riding the Tenhama private Railway Line the other day we decided to pay a visit to the Fruits Park of Hamamatsu City.

We had only one hour until the next train and the walk to the Fruits Park takes 10 minutes.
We knew we would be limited in time and the blistering heat didn’t help!

At least looking at the pavement we knew we couldn’t lose our way!

What is this fruit?

The temperature inside must have been well above 30 degrees with an incredible humidity.
The sweat prevented me to jot down notes and I’m afraid I don’t remember the names of some fruits! Let’s see if you can help me!

Fortunately there was plenty of running water to help cool down the dome!

Not only tropical fruit, but also plenty of beautiful flowers!
All in all, 80 varieties for 300 trees and plants!

Cocoa!

Start of the quizz!
What’s the name of those flowers?

What’s that fruit?

And what are these?

I’ve seen these flowers before…

It’s not a pineapple. What could it be?

Limes/ I doubt it…

Now, this a lime!

I’ve seen that one before, too!

Beautiful orchids there!

A pineapple!

What are these fruit?

Another pineapple!

Bananas!

Red bananas!

Insects and pests had better beware!

Banana flower!

Papaya!

More papayas!

And another pineapple!
