Nabe shrine (那部神社) in Yaizu City!

NABE-SHRINE-2

Nabe Shrine/那部神社 is located quite a long way on foot from Yaizu JR Station but it is worth the log walk even by a scorching summer day.
It is located in Hamatome 3 Chome at the foot of a hill overlooking the sea past a steep cliff.
The reason it is located from the center is that it had always been a major shrine for local fishermen.

NABE-SHRINE-3

There are no less than three stone torii gates along the way leading to the shrine.

NABE-SHRINE-4

The oldest of three torii!

NABE-SHRINE-5

It has its own roofed stone hand washing basin, although it is not regularly filled with water.

NABE-SHRINE-6

But is is still worth having a look at!

NABE-SHRINE-7

Dragon water spout!
Don’t steal it! (Unfortunately this happened recently in our Prefecture!)

NABE-SHRINE-8

Many stone lanterns have been donated through the ages!

NABE-SHRINE-9

An old lantern with a new pedestal!

NABE-SHRINE-10

Apparently it had a different name a long time ago, unless it had two distinctive names as it is the abode of not one, but of two deities!

NABE-SHRINE-11

You will discover a rare combination of two statues of lion guards and deities each!

NABE-SHRINE-12

The left hand side komainu/lion guard with its maw closed!

NABE-SHRINE-13

And its left hand side companion with its maw opened!

NABE-SHRINE-14

The deity on the left is Ebisu/恵比寿, the God of fishermen in particular!

NABE-SHRINE-15

The other deity is Daikokuten/大黒天, the God of prosperity among other attributes!

NABE-SHRINE-16

The “haiden/wosrhipers’ hall!

NABE-SHRINE-17

Complete with the usual paraphernalia!

NABE-SHRINE-18

Nabe Shrine/那閉神社 in the old writing!

NABE-SHRINE-19

The wooden money offerings box!

NABE-SHRINE-20

Decorated with a beautiful”mon/Japanese crest”!

NABE-SHRINE-21

A couple more smaller but probably older shrines!

NABE-SHRINE-22

An outside view of the “honden/God’s hall closed to outsiders!

NABE-SHRINE-23

An old anchor donated by local fishermen!

NABE-SHRINE-26

More smaller shrines!

NABE-SHRINE-27

The beautiful pinion of the haiden!

NABE-SHRINE-28

Yet another smaller shrine!

NABE-SHRINE-29

Another side view of the honden!

NABE-SHRINE-24

A back view of the alley!

NABE-SHRINE-25

Good-bye, Nabe Shrine!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 10

SN3O5610

Partly stone-built kura in Yoshiwara, Fuji City!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

SN3O5611

This very old kura I discovered along the street leading to Bishamonten Myouhouji Shrine/Temple in Yoshiwara, Fuji City, has the particularity to have walls covered with chiseled stone slabs, an unusual occurence in our Prefecture!

SN3O5612

Although the iron window and door curtains are very old it is still used as demonstrated by the recent water drain pipes!

SN3O5613

Another unusual feature: a very small window not leading to the actual inside of the kura but into its foundation!

SN3O5614

Looking at it from the side it is practically double-walled.
Very solid, indeed!

SN3O5523

I discovered this small-sized cocncrete block kura south of Yaizu City JR Station!

SN3O5524

It certainly looks old but the concrete blocks would denote its date just after WWII!

SN3O5525

It is still used as a warehouse. After all Yaizu City is a trading and fishing port city!

Climb to the upper floor and enter the narrow entrance.

Gastronomy on a Manhole Cover: Bonito in Yaizu City!

SN3O5522

I’ve been recently disparaged in some corners for adding tourism, environment and manhole covers to this gastronomic blog, but I would like to point out that tourism and environment walk hands in hands with gastronomy!

If you get off Yaizu JR Station from the south exit and take the main street on your right you will see many of these magnificently colored manhole covers on the pavement.

SN3O5521

Do take a care about cars before taking a picture across the street!

Yaizu City is classified as a major fishing harbor in Japan and deals with the biggest catches of bonito (katsuo/鰹).
No wonder it is featured on at least two types of manhole covers!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

No smoking Sign in Kakegawa castle!

SN3O5514

When you get from Yaizu JR Station take the South exit and walk down the stairs and turnleft at the bottom.
On your right you will discover a big marlin jumping out of a fountain!

SN3O5566

The locals know and use this place extensively as shown by those junior high school taking dip in a cold afternoon yesterday!

SN3O5515

This is true hot spring water pumped from a big public hot spring bath center just a few minutes away!
As for the volcanic stones under the marlin they were brought all the way from Mount Fuji!

SN3O5516

The foot bath is looked after the Kuroshio Onsen/Black Tide Hot Spring Company.
Actually it was completely cleaned and revamped last year!

SN3O5517

The best spot!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 15: Yaizu City

SN3O5072

One of the most beautiful manhole covers in Yaizu City I discovered near the City Hall!
I couldn’t determine if the fish are tuna or bonito as both are brought there in large numbers!

Yaizu City is one of the major fishing harbor cities in Japan with Numazu City and Shimoda City Tokyo couldn’t survive without. The other day I intensively research the city for manhole covers and I came with more than I bargained for as I included the whole technical range!

Brace yourselves!

SN3O5050

An older big manhole with tuna/bonito!
I couldn’t find it colored version!

SN3O5051

This one is probably the most famous of all with Mount Fuji and tuna/bonito!

YAIZU-CITY-3a

The same in different colors!

YAIZU-CITY-3b

The same again without the colors!

YAIZU-CITY-4

A very large sewer-type manhole cover!
Note the central motif generally found in Yaizu City!

SN3O5026

Practically the same but medium-sized!

SN3O5045

A similar but older type and without the central motif!

SN3O5052

Another celebrated manhole cover over a fire hydrant and celebrating the Yaizu Harbor Festival!

SN3O5062

This type can be found in many cities but this is the first time I discovered one with “GAS” written in English!

SN3O5024

Once again a common small sized one but with “valve pit” written in English and “GAS” in Japanese!

SN3O5025

The same as above but “valve pit” both in English and Japanese!

SN3O5023

The two of them side by side!
Take your pick!

SN3O5021

A large one “blended” in its surroundings!
I will have to to find out what “C.C.B.” means!

SN3O5029

Another modern but rectangular sewer manhole cover “blended” into its surroundings!

SN3O5030

Similar as above but square!

SN3O5075

Two different types together over heavy water machinery access!

SN3O5054

I found many of this small and cute type in the city so I doubt that they are private!

SN3O5047

An older and slightly smaller version than the above!

SN3O5028

A newer type of a water valve pit cover with clear measure indications!

SN3O5053

Another newer water valve pit cover, probably private!

SN3O5055

A private water valve pit cover!

SN3O5057

An old gas valve pit cover!

SN3O5022

A tiny C.C.B valve pit cover with the Yaizu City motif!

SN3O5066

An old medium-sized sewer manhole cover!

SN3O5074

A medium-sized sewer manhole cover which can bear up to 400 kg!

SN3O5070

A rare old type of valve pit cover!

SN3O5065

This comparatively small-sized private rain water cover is written with “No cars allowed to run over”!

SN3O5056

The same, but form another company!

SN3O5063

This one is owned by Harmonate Company!

SN3O5064

A smaller and different type from the same company!

SN3O5077

I found this medium type rain water cover on the platform of Yaizu JR station platform which can bear up to 400 kg!

SN3O5078

The same as above but without the central motif and the ability to bear up to 450 kg!

Blimey, 37 pictures in all!
