Wall Paintings in Fukuroi City
I was walking along the Oida River in Fukuroi City in search of sights when I espied these seemingly old paintings along the bank shoring!
Technically not a wall, these large concrete shoring had been obviously painted for some kind of city promotion.
I decide to have a closer look!
If I remember well these blue drawings are Mount Fuji mascots used all over the Prefecture!
I wonder why one is smiling and the others not.
What could have been the message?
now, I know that the owl, “fukuro” is the unofficial bird of Fukuroi City because of the almost identical pronunciation, although the kanji characters are completely unrelated!
my impression is that these painting date back to when the Soccer World Cup came to Japan as the drawing celebrates Ecopa Stadium which was used for the World Cup in Fukuroi City!
Oranges, of which Shizuoka Prefecture is the biggest producer in Japan and an owl again!
Basket ball? At the time the Japanese Professional didn’t exist yet…
Pity that the years and water have made it difficult to discern from far away!

Wall Paintings in Yaizu City!
Yesterday I was ambling along streets in Yaizu City in search of the manhole covers I had found out on the net when I reached a small bridge over the river crossing the city into the sea (yaizu City is one the major fishing harbors in Japan!).
The pavements in the vicinity of the bridge were decorated with some interesting tiles I was going to take pictures of when I noticed paintings on the wall along the pathway of the very quiet river full of Japanese carps!
The paintings had been ordered to real artists by the city to help promote its tourism!
This particular series depicted the Yaizu Harbor Festival, a major one in Shizuoka Prefecture which is held every year!
The local fishermen must be really looking forward to it!
O Mikoshi/Portable Shrines!
At least one lady seems after all to be part of it!
I will have to investigate!
As I amble along I found out that the river was in fact crossed by three bridges to allow the many avenues to go through and had a glimpse at another painting on another wall!
A legendary hero in a fiery scene with an erupting Mount Fuji in the background!
There were more to be seen from the third bridge!
They were all about and ancient legendary hero with hints of religion!
Confrontation!
Praying for succor!
Deity Symbols?

Wall Paintings in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
I was walking back from Seikenji Temple (report coming!) to Okitsu JR Station when I felt the pangs of hunger.
As most restaurants were closed for lunch on that day in this neighborhood I decide to see what a local supermarket had to offer when I espied a wall painting in the distance!
I couldn’t investigate it as I don’t know when I will be able to come back to Okitsu!
It had been painted quite a while ago but I suspect that the government is Shimizu Ku is behind it and probably had it done before they were merged into Shizuoka City!
Just before the “Map” Mount Fuji and various fish had been painted.
I’ll show you later why Mount Fuji was so prominent!
As for the fish Shimizu is a major fishing harbor (it also has a major industrial harbor!)!
I carefully checked and the fish represented there are really fish caught offshore!
Right half of the picture:
Interestingly enough most of the fish are solitary!
Can you recognize them: True Seabream, File Fish, Puff Fish/Globe Fish, Scabbard Fish, Grouper, etc.
Left half of the picture:
Here the fish are mostly in pairs!
Can you recognize them: Grey Seabream, True Seabream, Horse mackerel, etc.
Crabs!
We do have quite a few in the Suruga Bay, and some very rare!
The Map!
The right half also featuring local products, such as citruses and tea!
The Okitsu River is famous for its wild Ayu trouts!
The right half with plenty of oranges!
Can you see it?
Mount Fuji beyond the supermarket!

Wall Design: Numazu Ni Primary School
I did a lot of walking in the back streets of Numazu City yesterday, but it certainly was worth it!
i suddenly discovered this wall right in front of me!
I wondered what kind of building it was until I got nearer and found out it was of the building annexes of Primary School!
Numazu Ni (2nd) Primary School is a very large one by Japanese standards.
Being located close to the sea I understood the reasons behind the remarkable design!
A bright sun and the sea?
Coming closer I was impressed to find out it was a giant mosaic!
